Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated
The Beta Chi Chapter at The University of North Carolina at Charlotte
Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated was founded on March 15, 1989 at Albany, State University of New York. The historical marginalization of women, particularly women of color, has had a significant impact on the process by which multi-cultural, multi-ethnic and multi-racial women ascertain educational, economic, social and political capital in American society. In response to this reality, seventeen women from various racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds synthesized their passion, commitment and motivation. They envisioned an organization that would unify women of color who were dedicated to correcting the injustices that have, and continue to affect our communities. Since then, the organization is working towards the elimination of violence against women and the empowerment of women. As a national sorority, OPBSI is committed to the development of collegiate and professional women through sisterhood, diversity, leadership, service and academic excellence.
The Beta Chi Chapter
Eight diverse, collegiate womxn felt as though this was an organization that was different from all others. They came together to bring Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated to the Charlotte area. In just a few months, they developed a strong bond that would sustain them as they overcame all challenges that came their way. They knew that the UNC Charlotte campus and the Charlotte community as a whole would greatly benefit from the vision, mission, and motto of Omega Phi Beta. They met with sisters from the Beta Lambda Chapter (UNC-Chapel Hill) and Omicron Chapter (Duke), did much research, and worked closely with their leadership to establish roots in the Queen City.
Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated was officially recognized at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte on November 30, 2014 after the Chartering/Alpha Class was established. These womxn came together to create an opportunity for other womxn at UNC Charlotte. Their goal was to have a sisterhood dedicated to diversity that addresses issues in the community and works toward the development of strong womxn.
