Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Incorporated

The Epsilon Phi Chapter at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte

The UNC Charlotte Epsilon Phi Chapter of Lambda Theta Alpha represents the first and largest Latin sorority in the nation. As the Latino migration to the United States increased, so did the emergence of independent Latina women, eager to be at the forefront of an era of a new educational, political and social consciousness. As colleges and universities experienced an influx of Latino enrollment, the need for support groups and outreach programs were at an all time high. Despite their entrance into schools, women were still the minority, and their struggle for equality on every level had just begun. It was at this time in 1975 that seventeen women who shared a vision of a sisterhood that would cater to the needs of Latinas and the universal woman was born. Its focus would be to actively integrate itself into the social, political and community service arena;  thus making their voices as loud and profound as the majority voice and their concerns equally as important.  It allowed the independent Latina woman to have a sense of belonging and with that, achieve her highest potential, defining a new role for the Latina woman, one with education, goals and vision in hopes of great success. Now, several decades later, we have seen the outcome of such an organization, contributing to the advancement of all people by helping to produce educated women of many races, ethnicities, and creeds.

Their Story:

On October 20, 2012 ,the Epsilon Phi chapter was established as the fifth undergraduate chapter in North Carolina and the 116th in the nation. Ten lovely ladies brought the sorority to the campus of UNC Charlotte in hopes that they could make a difference not only in their lives, but in the lives of those around them. As the only chapter on this side of the state, Epsilon Phi promised to make their name known and to grew as a chapter by spreading their principles of unity, love and respect. Today, the Epsilon Phi chapter has grown to be one of the largest and fastest growing chapters in North Carolina. With the dedication of its sisters, they helped to establish several newer chapters and will soon have an Alumni Chapter based in Charlotte where they were able to thrive.
